Work out the HMRC mileage allowance you can claim for business journeys in your own vehicle, and what the fuel for a job really costs so you can charge for travel.
Cars and vans: 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, then 25p. Motorcycles 24p a mile, bicycles 20p, plus 5p a mile for each work colleague carried as a passenger.
Can I claim mileage for my commute? No. Ordinary travel between home and a permanent workplace does not count. Travel to customers and temporary sites usually does.
How is fuel cost worked out?Miles divided by your mpg gives gallons, times 4.546 litres per UK gallon, times the price per litre.
Should I charge customers for travel? Many trades add travel to the quote. The suggested charge adds your markup on top of the fuel cost.
